A weekend away--Maisha Cottage

What is it about vacation that makes us all so hungry? Fresh air? Miles of trekking Crescent Island with wildlife? Harrowing cliff hikes with babies and unsteady littles?

This "cabin" is a wonderful place of rest. It's like coming home to the idea in my head when I dreamed of moving to Africa. I'm inspired! Can't wait to go back and do some work on our house and yard. (Ironically it was all the issues of Southern Living that I paged through...but that's another culture that lives outdoors, isn't it?)

Here we found the perfect balance of outdoor fun and peaceful serenity. Held our newborn tightly as I watch Kirk teach 5 year old Claire how to build the perfect fire for s'mores while Ainsley is crashed out from all the excitement -- beautiful memories. When time slows down you can relish every moment, and appreciate each other more. Loved it all, from the buffeting winds that lulled us to sleep to the impetuous little birds that tapped the windows to wake us up in the morning. If we lived here full time, would the magic continue? One can dream.

Walking on Crescent Island with our guide, Geofrey.

Hello, zebra.

"Let's get closer!"

Dirt bath time!

Our little scientists check out bones with mommy.

Wildebeest.

There were two baby giraffes: one month old and one week old.

View from the top of the ridge.

Fish eagles. They each weigh around 40 pounds.

Maisha Cottage

The girls' favorite place: the hammocks.

The swing got a lot of use as well.

Claire, budding photographer, took this one!

S'mores dance!

A peaceful bedroom in the loft.

Deck on the second floor with a great swing!

Roasting marshmallows.

Both Claire and Ainsley were super helpful with Cecily.

Another Claire shot, this one at the top of the cliff about 100 feet above the house.

On a walk with mommy!

Cecily looks upset that she doesn't get a s'more...

The new treehouse. Maybe we'll stay there next time?

Some huge black and blue butterflies loved the bougainvillea.

Teaching Claire how to build a fire.

3rd picture in our morning sequence: big sister has been surprising us with getting dressed and setting the table all on her own. Now you see how our morning progresses. Feeling very lucky.

Every morning we get this cute little alarm clock climbing into our bed, declaring, it's morning time!"
