On the longest night of what has felt to many like the longest year in a while, a reminder from Tolkien: "There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."

Another picture of our cake. It was hard to make and not conventionally beautiful and we love it. We ate it before we ate dinner! Joy is not pretending all is great or fake smiles, joy is the real feeling of contentment- the one you appreciate precisely because the times before it were hard. Can I get an amen?
May we present: our Swedish Flop! (That's actually the name!) Anyone ever had a real one? They're supposed to be from the Chicago area. Did it take all day to make? Yes Is it, as the British Baking Show would say, "a bit informal"? Absolutely (read messy) Was it delicious? Totally In the spirit of the 3rd week of advent: Joy, it was just what we needed!

Did you know? Tonight marks the first Sunday of advent. The first candle represents HOPE. Keep the flame of Hope burning in your life, even if it's only a tiny sputtering flame right now. Let your people gather round to protect that precious flame. I imagine Hope as a fierce superhero, not a wimpy sentiment on a greeting card. What does Hope look like to you? Advent is my favorite tradition of the year and with all that 2020 has served up, counting down the days until Christmas by remembering all that has been done for us feels even more necessary than usual. To focus on the Hope we can have by being reminded that we are not alone, that we are loved, and that we are held is a beautiful thing. Here's to holding on to Hope as we close out this year.

It was a making kind of day! Our first try at terrariums was fun. These fun apple juice bottles from @martinellisco make fun containers. We repurposed our smallest fairy garden things, added seeds and plants from the yard, and some fun, sparkly extras from our neighbor (plus a TON of her patience!). Claire was excited to discover that we were making mini water systems-which she just learned about in science!

The dappled sunlight, the cute little song she's singing under her breath as she plays on the fairy garden... we are hitting reset on this day. It's been a bad morning, there was lots of yelling and crying. I put my grumpy self in time out and this is what I saw! The big girls are working diligently inside and they are all quicker to forgive than I deserve.
