The newest addition to our yard...a bat house! Looking forward to attracting a family of bats to watch and learn from. We've already learned so much... they need several feet of clearance below because they "fall into flight," preferably south- facing with plenty of sunlight to keep them warm. My favorite fact so far is that a bat can eat up to 1,200 mosquitoes in an hour!

So a couple of months ago, the girls decided that they wanted to sell some of their clay creations on the farmstand and donate half of the proceeds to charity. We said that we'd match their donation amount, and off they went to start creating. We sat down yesterday and went through a big list of suggested organizations to donate to (link in bio), talking about what each one does and what our family stands for and wants to support. We came up with some good recipients! Claire chose to donate to @theconsciouskid and @eji_org and Ainsley chose @bailproject and @black.thumb.farm. Cecily said that she liked all of them, so we chose @prisonbookprogram for her. Thank you so much to everyone who bought their sculptures. This has also inspired us to create an instagram for the farmstand so that we can highlight what we've been up to in our garden and the school garden. Follow us at @sweetpea_farmstand. We're excited to see where this takes us!

Community in the time of Corona is a tricky thing. It's full of contradictions. Check out this picture from our front porch! Can you even see the "all are welcome" sign behind the giant vine we've allowed to cover our front walkway? What a mixed message 🙄 How have you kept reaching out and reimagining community in new ways?
Morning view of our home garden. Each season we try to learn something new and the plants never cease to teach us! This spring, the focus was on companion planting, edible flowers, and attracting more pollinators. *maybe* we went overboard? I promise there are actually veggies tucked in there (carrots, peppers, basil, leeks, tomatoes, cucumbers, and green onions, plus masses of strawberries), but the beauties that make me smile everyday have stolen the show (calendula, zinnia, chamomile, marigold, fennel and borage). Don't be afraid to try something new, it just might be your new favorite!
