Giving Christmas Away (part 2)

A few weeks ago, we had a picture of all the washcloths Nana had made for the boys at IAfrika. That was part 1...

Part 2 was Claire's class Christmas party:

Her teacher is year is AMAZING and she is also crazy enough to let a few of us moms throw out crazy ideas when it comes to "helping" in class (see pumpkin seed math day!) It got me thinking about changing the nature of the Christmas party, and the parents were in full support! We had an amazing group of 10 parents (!) who were super helpful in getting everything done. (My lesson planning is for high school, remember, so it was, um, "ambitious" of us to attempt).

We read a really cute book, Christmas Cookies:Bite-Size Holiday Lessons, that taught all kinds of great vocabulary.

We started December with an Advent of Kindness, where each day of class they tore off a chain link with ideas of how to spread kindness to others. So next, the kids made their own kindness chains to get them up through Christmas and most of the break-ideas they could do with their family and ways to help keep kindness going!

Then, they each made handmade Christmas cards to attach to the soap/washcloth bundles. They had fun decorating them with stickers and signing in cursive! We thought it would be much more meaningful if each boy got a homemade card to accompany his gift. We showed a slideshow of the boys at I Afrika and talked about their school there.

Overall, it was really impressive how kind and enthusiastic the students were. They were happy to make things for others and to talk about more ways to make people smile this Christmas season. It was so encouraging to see how giving they were since Christmas is often focused on what we receive (especially as little kids!)
